Trang archipelago

The Andaman Sea offers postcard-perfect turquoise beaches with soft white sand. Trang islands retain a sleepy, tropical charm. You can reach the archipelago easily from Ko Lanta by a snorkelling tour. Ko Muk is closest and most easily accessible island from Trang. It's mostly occupied by sea-facing cliffs to the west. Rent a sea kayak and paddle to the Emerald Cave, a winding stalactite-lined sea cavern. Visit Ao Sabai, the island’s only uninhabited beach, or head to Ao Kham on the eastern side of the island. Ko Kradan is part national park, part resort island. Go and admire the powdery white beach and clear water that permits a decent view of the coral reef and colourful fish.

Ko Libong, the largest Trang island, is known for its mangroves protected by a wildlife reserve. The sea channels here are one of the last habitats of the rare dugong. Around 40 of them graze on the abundant sea grasses just offshore. Ko Ngai (Koh Hai) can be also included in the Trang island-hopping itinerary. This tiny, unspoilt island is covered by tropical forest and surrounded by magnificent corals. Snorkelling is easy along the western and southern coasts, where some amazing reefs can be accessed directly from the beach. There are no roads on the island, so you can get around on foot, or longtail boats.

National parks

If you want to enjoy Thailand without visiting the beach, head to one of its inland national parks. You’ll have the chance to discover the pristine landscapes. Visit Erawan National Park and enjoy its natural beauty and unspoiled wilderness. Climb up the Erawan Falls, explore the caves and bathe in the natural pools. Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park is notable for its limestone hills, 300 species of birds and the Phaya Nakhon Cave, that has a Buddhist temple inside.

Located near the Burmese border, Kaeng Krachan National Park and Kui Buri National Park are recognized as being the best destinations in Thailand for wildlife viewing. Khao Yai National Park, in the Sankamphaeng Mountain Range (central Thailand), is appealing to hikers, mountain climbers and wildlife lovers. The park is known for its grasslands, tropical forests and waterfalls, the largest being Haew Narok. Some of the animals you’re likely to see here include elephants, gibbons, monkeys and leopards. It's even possible to spot a tiger!
