The original plan was to complete the world’s first planned sustainable city by 2016. But due to the global financial crisis of the late 2000s, it was never finished.
As of today, Masdar is like a ghost city - it is currently meeting less than 1% occupancy. Only 5% of the original project has been fully constructed. Current estimates have this futuristic city being completed by 2030. The planning directors decided to abandon the zero carbon idea, and are currently building the rest of Masdar City to be 50% carbon-neutral.
