Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo)

The Indonesian territory of Kalimantan makes up 2/3 of Borneo island. With tropical rainforest that stretches for thousands of kilometres, it’s a land of unexplored natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Tanjung Puting National Park is an excellent place to meet a Proboscis monkey, gibbon or glimpse a wild orangutan swinging through the jungle canopy. Derawan Archipelago (e.g. Sangalaki, Maratua, Samama Islands) offer some of the world’s best diving. Swimming in a calm, warm water of the sting-less jellyfish lagoon in Samama Island is definitely a very unique experience. Relax on Kemala or Lamaru Beach in Balikpapan and visit Margomulyo Mangrove Forest.

Swim, dive or snorkel in the crystal clear Labuan Cermin Lake that has two type of water in it. Saltwater at the bottom never passes to the surface where the fresh water is. In the Mahakam River in East Kalimantan you can spot freshwater dolphin. In the early morning, take a "klotok" (traditional boat) and head to the floating market at the junction of the Kuin and Barito rivers or Lok Baintan Floating Market on the Tabuk Rover. You can also visit the city of Pontianak, which lies exactly on the equator or explore one of the gold or diamond mines.
