Cypriot cuisine

The island offers a number of culinary specialities. Meze is a dish of up to 30 different small morsels, including fresh bread with herbs and olive oil, tzatziki, olives, hummus, lamb meat, calamari and much more. Don't forget to try grilled meats (souvlaki and sheftalia) and pork sausages (loukaniko). They are typically stuffed into a pitta or wrapped in a thin flatbread. Typical of Cyprus is also halloumi, a semi-hard, brined cheese made from a mixture of goat's and sheep's milk, often garnished with mint.

You can go on a Cypriot food tour to discover traditional gastronomy. Visit a small goat farm where you will be demonstrated how you can make halloumi cheese. Despite the country's turbulent past and present, the inhabitants of Cyprus are relaxed and friendly towards visitors. In the wine villages in Omodos visitors can learn all about the production of the island's strong red wines. The most famous one is Commandaria, an amber-coloured sweet dessert wine made on the foothills of the Troödos Mountains. You can end your day with a glass of iced ouzo in one of the local taverns.
