Explore the Cathar castles (Châteaux cathares) of the Pyrenees region. There are ruined medieval fortresses located on mountain tops as at Montségur, Termes and Puilaurens. You can also head to Château de Foix, a beautiful castle which dominates the town of Foix. Built in the style of 7th-century fortification, the castle is known from 987.
Château de Pau, a famous castle in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, is currently a National Museum. The fully restored tower of the 12th century Château de Mauvezin, which protected the Baronnies in the Middle Ages, houses an exhibit of scuptures and paintings. Chateau Fort of Lourdes is a thousand-year-old fortress that offers exceptional views of Lourdes and the Pyrenees. Within its walls there is also a botanical garden at the foot of the 14th-century keep, and the Pyrenean Museum.
