Stone Town, the old part of Zanzibar City, was a flourishing centre of the spice trade as well as the slave trade in the 19th century. Visit the Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe), built with traditional Zanzibari coral rag, and buy some fruits at the Darajani Bazaar. Wander through the narrow winding streets to see Freddie Mercury's House and Hamamni Persian Baths.
A visit to the museum in the former Sultan's Palace (Beit el-Sahel) is highly recommended to learn the Omani history of Zanzibar. Explore the Mtoni Palace ruins (Beit el Mtoni) - the birthplace of the famous Arabian princess Salme who fell in love and ran away with the German merchant. You can also visit the finely decorated Old Dispensary and the House of Wonders (Beit al-Ajaib) - the first building in Zanzibar that had electricity and an elevator.
