This ruined and ancient fort located on the north western coast of Qatar was founded by merchants from Kuwait in the first half of the XVIII century. The walled coastal town of Al Zubarah was once a successful centre of global trade and pearl fishing, before it was destroyed in 1811 and abandoned in the early 1900s. A layer of sand blown from the desert has protected the remains of the old palaces, mosques, houses, streets, and fishermen's huts. The layout of the settlement has been preserved, providing an insight into the urban life and the history of the Persian Gulf.
The archaeological site, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013, comprises the fortified town, a harbour, a sea canal, double defensive walls, Murair Fort and Zubarah Fort.
