Boasting three of the ancient Silk Road’s most important cities (Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand), Uzbekistan was once the cradle of culture and trade. Nowadays, it is known for well-preserved Islamic architecture with shimmering minarets and mosaic tile domes.
In western Uzbekistan there is a ghost town in the middle of the desert. Moynaq was once a busy fishing port on the Aral Sea, famed for its fishing and canning industries. Due to the recession of the lake, its harbour has turned into a graveyard of shipwrecks. As the lake dried up its salinity levels rose, killing all the fish.
Once one of the four largest lakes in the world, the Aral Sea began to shrink in the 1960s, when the rivers feeding it were diverted for irrigation purposes. Today, the closest shore is almost 160 km (100 miles) from here.
