Located 400km north of the Arctic Circle at 69˚N, the small city of Tromsø bills itself as Norway’s gateway to the Arctic, and there’s definitely more than a hint of polar atmosphere around town. Surrounded by chilly fjords and craggy peaks that remain snowcapped for much of the year, Tromsø sits on the eastern edge of Tromsøya, and is linked to the mainland by a gracefully arched bridge.
The name of this northern land literally means "cold edge". Situated about midway between continental Norway and the North Pole, Svalbard was a whaling base in the 17th and 18th centuries. This Norwegian archipelago, centred on the island of Spitzbergen, features an Arctic climate, tempered by warm North Atlantic Current. Summers are cool (July average 6.1°C) and winters are cold (January average -15.8°C), but wind chill means that it usually feels colder.
Svalbard, with its seven national parks, is a breeding ground for many seabirds, and also features polar bears, reindeer, seals and the Arctic fox. Approximately 60% of the archipelago is covered with glaciers. Longyearbyen is the largest populated area on this territory. This settlement is an ideal base for the greater exploration of many mountains and fjords.
