The Seychelles are the oldest oceanic islands to be found anywhere on Earth. If you love peace and serenity on a quiet postcard beach, take a day trip to Silhouette Island, located 20 km to the northwest of Mahé. Its white sand beaches rim a mountainous interior, with peaks reaching 740 meters. The third largest of the archipelago's granitic islands is also home to one of only two Seychelles virgin rainforests. In the mid-18th century, the French established spice plantations here, growing nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon and pepper plants.
Silhouette has been a marine national park since 1987. Over 92 percent of the island has been designated a protected area. This tropical paradise has well maintained trails. It is home to incense trees, 125 year old giant tortoises and an abundance of endemic plant and animal species.
