Senegal is one the most beautiful countries of the West African coast with sandy beaches, sunny weather and rich fauna.
The Bandia Reserve lies 65 km from Dakar and 15 km from the seaside resort town of Saly-Portugal. Surrounded by giant baobabs and thorny scrub, you will get close to monkeys, herds of big antelopes and gazelles, giraffes, buffalos and rhinoceros. You can get around this wildlife reserve in a private four wheel drive vehicle or hire a safari truck. Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary, designated a World Heritage Site, lies on the southeast bank of the Senegal River. This wetland, comprising a large lake surrounded by streams, is a habitat of migrating birds, many of which have just crossed the Sahara. You'll find there pelicans, flamingos and cormorants.
Niokolo-Koba National Park, inscribed on UNESCO list, covers the banks of the Gambia River. Its forests and savannahs have a very rich fauna, including antelopes, chimpanzees, lions, leopards and a large population of elephants. Somone Lagoon Reserve, located on the banks of the Somone River, is home to many different types of birds. A sandy stretch between the river and the baobab forest serves as a beach and a departure point for boat tours. This vast sandy area is more or less flooded by tides or rain in the rainy season. In the dry season, nature lovers have the opportunity of going on a nature ramble in the dry riverbed in the shade of great mahogany trees.
