What to do:
Swimming, bathing and diving are popular sports in Cyprus. The Zenobia wreck is one of the world’s ten best diving wrecks. Windsurfers and kitesurfers can pursue their hobbies in the bays at the East coast.
Go hiking in Cape Greco National Forest Park or visit the mythical Aphrodite’s Rock, located at the Petra tou Romiou Beach. According to legend, the goddess was born from the sea foam at exactly this point.
Ayia Napa is famous for its nightlife. There are bars, clubs and entertainment to suit every taste and budget. Big events with top worldwide DJ’s happen from late June until early August.
The highest peak in Cyprus is Mount Olympus (1,952 m) in the Troödos Mountains. During a trekking trip you can discover aromatic stone pine forests, hidden waterfalls and secluded streams. Sometimes there is snow in the higher mountainous regions in the short wintertime, so you can even bring your winter sport equipment and go skiing on Mount Olympus. The winter season on Cyprus lasts from January to March.
There is a well-developed network of nature trails in the island. With a bit of luck, you can spot chameleons, turtles and the mouflon agrino, a wild sheep that only exists in Cyprus, Corsica and Sardinia. You can pet, feed and “adopt” the tame animals in the Donkey Sanctuary near Limassol.
Travellers who are interested in culture and architecture will be delighted with the archaeological site Paphos and the painted churches in the Troodos region (part of the UNESCO World Heritage).
You should not miss out on the capital Nicosia. Museums, mosques and shops string together in its labyrinthine old part of town. Buy some souvenirs, like a small shisha, thyme honey or ceramic mosaics.
Looking for thrills? In Northern Cyprus you can explore the ghost town of Famagusta (there are bus trips from Paralimni and Protaras). Discover Varosha Beach Resort, once a popular beach holiday destination. In 1974 the city was taken by Turkish forces, now it stands abandoned and creepy. Nicosia International Airport, a former Cyprus flight hub, is another crumbling ghost complex in the demilitarized zone between two countries.
In addition, a significant sector of eco-tourism has been developed in Northern Cyprus, as tourists visit it for birdwatching, cycling, walking and observing flowers in the wild.
