What to do:
Sri Lanka is filled with romantic landscapes, timeless ruins, lush forests and gushing waterfalls. The island is boasting numerous attractions, from elephant sanctuaries to spiritual temples. There are 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites packed in one small island. Culture lovers should pay a visit to ancient kingdom of Polonnaruwa, the island’s finest collection of ancient Sinhalese art and architecture. This country is also a perfect destination for adrenaline junkies, from wild white water rafting on the Kelani River and kayaking the Mahaweli to surfing in Mirissa or kite surfing on Negombo beach. Thrill seekers can also try jungle mountain biking or rock climbing in the Knuckles Mountain Range.
If you are seeking a remote and secluded beach, the ones in the deep South and East of Sri Lanka are the best. You can play cricket on the beach or just relax and soak up the sun. The South West coast is famous for coral reefs in close proximity to the shores and ideal for snorkelling and diving. Turtle watches are run nightly at the villages of Kosgoda and Rekawa. You can also go whale and dolphin watching from Mirissa or Uppuveli.
Enjoy a 4×4 wildlife safari and explore one of the numerous natural parks in one of the world’s most biodiverse islands. For leopards, head to Yala National Park. Elephants can be seen in every national park in the country. Bicycle your way through the green plantations on a tea tasting or take a culinary lesson and try mouth-watering local cuisine.
