Just outside of Saranda you can admire the archaeological and natural heritage of Butrint, inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list. Inhabited since prehistoric times, it has been the site of a Greek colony, a Roman city and a bishopric. The present site is a repository of ruins representing each period in the city’s development. You can explore the monuments dating back to the antiquity, including the city walls, late-antique baptistery, great basilica, theatre and Venetian castles.
In addition to archaeological remains, the site of the ancient city is situated within natural woodland with a complex ecosystem which depends on the nearby freshwater Lake Butrint and Vivari Channel.
