Ohau Stream Walkway, located 1, 27 km north of Kaikoura, is a 280 m trail that gives you a chance to see baby seals. During the colder months you can take a short walk from a car parking area up to a small picturesque waterfall to watch adorable seal pups that have travelled up from the ocean. A lot of puppy seals come here to play around the little idyllic pool. Try not to make loud noise at the Ohau stream and do not enter the water! Five minutes further south there is the Ohau Point Lookout over New Zealand’s only Fur Seal Sanctuary. Even when there are no pups in Ohau Stream you can always see seals along the rocks at this breeding colony.
Wharariki Beach, located west of Cape Farewell, is a huge open sand beach where you can also spot puppy seals in the winter months.
