Süleymaniye Mosque, located on the Third Hill of Istanbul, blends the best of Islamic and Byzantine architecture. Extensively damaged over the years, this grand structure was newly restored to its original splendour in the mid-20th century. This complex of buildings contains several madrasahs, a hospital, a library, a hamam, a kitchen and a school. The mosque is marked by four minarets, indicating it was built by the fourth sultan since the conquest of Constantinople. It is free to visit when calls to prayer are not taking place.
Pay a visit to the Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Cami) to admire its priceless treasures that include 20,000 ceramic tiles and 200 stained glass windows. It was constructed in the early 17th century for Sultan Ahmed I, determined to build a mosque that rivalled the nearby Hagia Sophia. Facing the old Byzantine basilica across a small park, it is one of only a few mosques in the world to boast six minarets. The property is open 24 hours a day but closes six times daily for calls to prayer.
