The Spanish conquistadors destroyed the five ancient pyramids and used their ruins to build Merida’s cathedral and other buildings. The remains of the pre-Hispanic city of Mayapan are only 40 kilometres away from Merida.
Majestic Chichén Itzá is the obvious choice for a Mayan ruin to visit. This archaeological site is dominated by El Castillo step-pyramid, also known as the Temple of Kukulcan, built by the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. The Tulum ruins are the only ones built by the sea, so after sightseeing you can head down to the beach for a refreshing dip. Coba is a much larger site than Tulum and Uxmal is less crowded and has more interesting ruins. Ek' Balam is noted for several temples, two palaces and a large pyramid.
