Wildlife tourism
The flora of Mauritius is composed of 700 species of indigenous plants. The "green" south is the island's wilder, but perhaps more interesting side. Explore the mountainous Frederica Nature Reserve or climb up the Black River Peak (828 m) - the highest one. Visit Le Morne Brabant (556 m) which was used as a refuge for runaway slaves in the 19th century.
La Vanille Nature Park, set in a beautiful valley, is home to various species of animals, reptiles and plants. At different places around the island you can spot rare pink pigeon, the Mauritian kestrel and giant tortoise. Dolphins, whales and sharks are just three highlights of the island's richly biodiverse marine environment.
