This is the reason for the name of the island, 'Madeira' meaning 'wood' in Portuguese. This outstanding relict of a previously widespread type of humid subtropical forest is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It contains a unique suite of plants and animals, including many endemic species such as the Madeiran long-toed pigeon.
Parts of this forest still remain, mainly on the northern slopes of the Island. To enjoy the Laurisilva, choose the easy scenic walking tour around the levadas near Rabaçal (PR6 trail). You can also hike the Caminho Real para Todos trail or head to the beautiful waterfall in the end of Levada Caldeirao Verde (PR9 trail).
