This budget airline will increase the carry-on baggage limit! Now you can bring a free suitcase on board

From September 2, all passengers booking tickets in the Economy Light fare will be able to bring on board, in addition to a backpack, a cabin suitcase measuring 56x45x25 cm and weighing up to 10 kilograms – announced Norse Atlantic, the Norwegian budget airline specializing in flights from Europe to the USA.

In recent years, we have become accustomed to the idea that if an airline modifies baggage limits, it usually reduces the allowed number or size of bags rather than allowing passengers to bring additional items on board. Therefore, the news from Norway is quite surprising. A few days ago, Norse Atlantic Airways, a local carrier, announced changes to its cheapest Economy Light fare, where until now travelers could only bring one ‘personal item’ (such as a small backpack) measuring 40x30x15 centimeters. Any more baggage than this would incur additional charges, as is typical with ‘light’ fares.

However, this is set to change – the airline has announced that for all bookings in the Economy Light fare made from September 2 onwards, passengers will be able to bring a 10-kilogram suitcase measuring 56x45x25 cm on board as part of their ticket price. Meanwhile, passengers with bookings in the Economy Classic fare can still bring one piece of checked luggage weighing up to 23 kilograms without any change.

Why this decision? The carrier states in its announcement that it is a way to reward loyal passengers and those most eager for adventure.

However, it is possible that these changes are due to fierce competition for passengers on transatlantic routes, which are a key area of operation for Norse. Recent months have brought concerning news about increased competition between carriers and declining demand for flights between Europe and the USA, as recently discussed by Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr. In this situation, it is not surprising that carriers are doing everything they can to attract passengers. This likely explains the move by the Norwegian carrier.
