During World War II, Japan constructed the meter-gauge railway line from Thailand to Burma (Myanmar), now known as the Death Railway. The Bridge on the River Kwai, made famous in novel and in the film adaptation, was actually not the iron bridge of the Burma Railway. A bridge was built of wood approximately 100 metres (330 ft) upriver from the current one. Bombed by the Allied forces in 1945, the present bridge has two of its central spans rebuilt and the original parts are now displayed in the War Museum.
