The historic centre of Bukhara is inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Situated on the Silk Route between China and the Mediterranean, the city is more than 2,000 years old. It is one of the best examples of well-preserved medieval cities in Central Asia. This historic town offers a wealth of beautiful mosques and palaces.
The famous tomb of Ismail Samani, a masterpiece of 10th-century Muslim architecture, remains one of the city's most notable landmarks. Bukhara is also known for a large number of 17th-century madrassas (religious schools) and other Islamic buildings, like the Great Minaret of the Kalon and Poi Kalyan Mosque.
