The first shot of the Covid-19 vaccine may be enough to travel within the EU this Summer

Great news! According to several sources, travel without the need to present a negative Covid-19 test will benefit more European citizens than expected this Summer! Austria is implementing the measure starting from today!

Some interesting news came to light during the implementation of the EU Green Certificate – expected to be introduced somewhere in late June. As its widely known, this new travel document will show if a passenger has been vaccinated against COVID-19, has recovered from the virus or has a negative test, in order to smooth travel inside the European Bloc.

What is really new is that, according with the Brussels Times, quoting De Standaard, the vaccination requirement will allow free travel within the Union to a person that has only received one shot of a vaccine that requires two inoculations, such as Moderna, Pfizer or AstraZeneca.

The Austrian Government, got ahead of it’s EU partners and has already included it as one of three requirements in order to enter the country starting from today:

You need to be able to show any one of these 3 documents to enter Austria:

  • Negative COVID Test: You need to show a PCR test no older than 72 hours OR an antigen test no older than 48 hours. Tests need to be issued by a medical authority; self-tests are not valid. Children under 10 do not need to show a test.
  • Vaccine Certificate: All vaccines approved by EMA/WHO are recognised. You are considered “vaccinated” starting on the 22nd day after your first dose, lasting for 3 months. After the second dose, the validity extends for another 6 months. Vaccines that only require one dose are valid from the 22nd day after that dose.
  • Proof of Past Infection: You can enter Austria for 6 months after a SARS-CoV-2 infection. Proof of antibodies is valid for 3 months from the test date.

According to Brussels Times, the reason for this interesting (and welcome) new decision is allowing the biggest number young people possible to travel freely this summer since it’s expected that, in the best of chances, most of them will only have the first shot of the vaccine.
