Uruguay has the world’s longest carnival – the celebrations can last up to 40 days. It involves a series of cultural events such as dance parades in the streets, street stages called “tablados” and an artistic contest at “Teatro de Verano”. During carnival groups of dancers and drummers sing and dance to candombe music. In 2016 the main dance parades in Montevideo will start around January 28th. Tickets for the carnival celebrations can be bought in any Abitab store in Uruguay up until 5 p.m. the day before the event (about 10 USD).
Seasons in Uruguay run opposite to those in the United States – summer lasts from December to March and winter occurs in June through September.
