Driving along the North Otago coast you should stop to stare at the amazing Moeraki Boulders - mysteriously spherical stones scattered across the Koekohe Beach near Moeraki. These boulders are actually calcite concretions, originally formed in ancient sea floor sediments about 65 million years ago. Some of the boulders weigh several tonnes and are up to 3 metres in diameter.
Virtually identical spherical boulders, called Koutu Boulders, are found on the beaches, in the cliffs, and beneath the surface inland of the shore of Hokianga Harbour, between Koutu and Kauwhare points (North Island).
